Lossless compression preserves decoded pixel values but cannot promise an arbitrary byte target. Lossy compression discards information. Reducing dimensions is a separate change that can further reduce file size.
Decisions before you begin
- Quality or lossless encoding
- Target file size
- Dimensions and palette size
Prepare the task
- Record the source dimensions and file size and identify the required upload limit.
- Compare a modest quality change before reducing dimensions or colors.
- Check actual output bytes and inspect text, gradients and transparent edges.
