Format decisions

JPG is widely compatible for photographs and has no alpha transparency. PNG preserves pixel values without lossy encoding and can retain partially transparent edges. WebP can use lossy or lossless encoding and supports alpha. GIF uses indexed palettes and can animate. Changing a container cannot recover detail already lost in the source.

Understanding image to hdr/exr

HDR or EXR preparation stores image values in formats suited to extended range workflows.

Converting an ordinary image does not create scene brightness information that was never captured.

A practical workflow

  1. Choose the required source files, if any. Files are handled as stated in the workspace privacy label.
  2. Set the available controls and apply the operation.
  3. Compare the actual output, check its dimensions and download the generated file.

Decisions and limitations

  • Destination format

16 megapixels, 20 MB input and 64 MB output. The deployment needs ImageMagick with the destination codec.

Questions about this task

Where do I use the current tool?

Encode decoded source values in an actual HDR or EXR container. An ordinary source does not gain additional captured dynamic range.

What should I check for image to hdr/exr?

Converting an ordinary image does not create scene brightness information that was never captured.

Which settings and formats are confirmed?

HDR or EXR. 16 megapixels, 20 MB input and 64 MB output. The deployment needs ImageMagick with the destination codec.
